The Fairfield County incident happened on Tuesday, Feb. 6 in the town of Fairfield.
According to the Fairfield Police Department, 27-year-old Bin Sun sent an email to the elderly victim, who was not named, claiming a charge of $525 from the Geek Squad.
The victim called the number provided in the email, ready to dispute the charge, and spoke to Sun. Because they thought the call legitimate, the victim provided him with their bank account information and access to their computer.
Sun allegedly manipulated the victim into believing that a $25,000 refund had accidentally been processed. Because of this, he then convinced the victim to withdraw $20,000 in cash from the bank — which the scammer would later pick up from their home — with a plan to pick up the remaining $5,000 the next day.
The victim worked with the police to set up surveillance, waiting until Sun pulled up in the vehicle he had described to the victim.
Sun was arrested, where police found a substantial amount of cash on his person.
He was charged with criminal attempt at larceny and held on a $10,000 bond. He is due to appear at Bridgeport Superior Court on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
